Exhibit Builder

Until recently, any and all online exhibits have been built by hand using content supplied to the web team; we’re piloting a new content management system (CMS) to enable staff (with editorial support from Marketing & Communications) to build exhibits themselves.

The software we’re testing is called Omeka - it’s a product of the Center for History & New Media at George Mason University, and is intended to enable museums and libraries to quickly and easily create online archives and exhibits. Once we decide that the software can do the work we’d want it to do, we’ll do some adapting to our local needs - mainly, wiring it to a Fedora backend so that materials can be drawn directly from our digital repository.

The first pilot project will be a survey of the Treasures of the New York Public Library, and will be linked here shortly…
