New Design

One of the major goals of this Digital Gallery design refresh - currently in its early planning stages - is to make the site’s home page more visually intuitive, direct, bright and lucid. Overall, our design should hopefully provide a sense that the site is opening up the vast stacks of the New York Public Library’s collections.

We are trying to achieve an acceptable balance between needed simplicity and necessary complexity. Building a large site with both a friendly learning curve and the tools to reward returning “power users” is not a trivial task.

Here is a screenshot of one of the latest design drafts. There will be more changes as the new design is further refined.

Jennifer, Your design is beautiful, as usual. I also really love the blog graphics - they are both clever and intuitive. I can’t wait to see what else you do with the Digital Gallery.

Thanks, Cathie! I too am eager to see what’s next. :) This refresh is a great oppurtunity to reinvent how we present images in the context of a searchable resource, so I’m rather excited.
